The Real Flip

If we can get students to flip their thinking from this:



If I know the rules, then I can do the math. 




to this:



If I do the math, I can know the rules.



Then we've won.

This is a most worthy battle, but I find it is easily undermined by others who continue to reinforce the mindset that "if I know the rules, I can do the math." Perhaps, it is the mind of educators that we first must change. In doing so, wouldn't we then alter the minds of students?

Of course, this is easier said than done. I would love to hear ideas.
